On January 21, 2017, the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, over half a million men, women and children united in America’s capital to marched against the anti-women and anti-diversity statements and positions attributed to the 45th President. It was the largest single-day demonstration in U.S. history and worldwide participation was estimated at five million. This unprecedented grassroots movement was streamed live on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter and sent “a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights“. Just over a week later, on 30th January 2017, Susan Kiefel was sworn in as Australia’s first female Chief Justice of the High Court.  Chief Justice Kiefel used her speech to reflect on the historic occasion for all women in law.  Her rise from high school drop out to the highest position in our nation’s top judge is an inspiration to women everywhere. These are two bold statements for women, but, unlike so many female victories over the last century, these events had the involvement and support of both men and women.  It is an encouraging sign of how things are changing and echo’s the call of Australia’s former Sex Discrimination Commissioner (2007-2015) Elizabeth Broderick: “Gender equality is not a battle of the sexes; it is a battle for equality – a battle that men and women must wage side by side. After all, the empowerment of women is part of the empowerment of humanity.” To celebrate International Women’s Day this month, The Office Space is applauding all women, but in particular, the amazing working  women, mothers, daughters and sisters in our business community.
