Local Sydney siders were saddened by the closure of much-loved Italian gem 121BC, and in turn, have been anxiously awaiting its tenant’s new venture. We’ve been hopeful that the new business can not only live up to but also carry on the legacy of our former Surry Hill’s favourite. Enter Porteño’s Joe Valore with co-chefs Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate, who took over the former fan-fav in mid-2017, keeping its soul well and truly alive with the newly opened Wyno Bar and Shop. The space is a traditionally cozy and warm wine bar, with the usual fixtures: dim lights, soft tones and communal table seating, perfect for those intimate date nights. The small menu has the familiar Porteño charm – it’s simple, playful and full of flavour. The starters include buttery sardines, with mains serving up octopus ragu (to die for), tuna with gooseberries and seafood sausage. The wine list to match is extensive, with beautiful Italian wines sourced from local producers, as well as a solid range of the well-known classics. Though the prices do add up, it’s decadent, delightful and so worth the extra splurge. Call into Wyno for a post-work vino, order something from the seasonal menu, and ease into 2018 – we sure will be.
