Motivational Material

In uncertain times, look for the good. We’ve prepared another iso-friendly list of reading/watching activities to keep our brains activated over the next month. In the spirit of this month’s theme, check out our list of Motivational Material to keep your spark burning this August.

Limitless – Jim Kwik (Book)

When he was a child, Limitles author Jim Kwik struggled with serious learning difficulties resulting from a brain injury. Having battled through school, Kwik then spent his university days “learning how to learn”, choosing to dedicate his life to educating others about how to learn more effectively. Exploring what Kwik describes as the three keys to becoming limitless, Mind-set, Motivation and Methods, Limitless takes readers through practical tools on how to learn more effectively. Having made both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller list, it’s clear that this latest book from the world’s leading brain coach is revolutionising the way we think about learning.

Limitless is also available as an audio book, read by Jim Kwik himself on Audible.

Mrs. America (TV)

Starring Australian’s Cate Blanchett and Rose Byrne, ‘Mrs. America’ tells the story of the 1970’s fight around the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in America. The show is a nuanced, partially fictionalised depiction of the backlash that the women’s movement faced in dealing with Phyllis Schlafly, and anti-feminist conservative who attempted to dismantle the amendment (portrayed by an astounding Cate Blanchett).

In the Los Angeles Times, show creator Dahvi Waller writes:

“What I really wanted to do with this series is show there’s so many different ways to be a woman and there’s so many different definitions of womanhood and there’s so much diversity that sisterhood and womanhood isn’t monolith. And I thought, the best way to really dramatize that was to have these multiple perspectives.”

Watch Mrs. America via Foxtel Go.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (Documentary Film)

An oldie but a goodie, ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ follows Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old Japanese man considered to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. After Jiro’s 10-seat sushi restaurant located in a Tokyo subway station is awarded a prestigious 3 star Michelin review, sushi lovers from around the world flock to Jiro’s restaurant, dying to experience the taste of true perfection. Centring around the complicated relationship between Jiro Ono and his eldest son Yoshikazu, who has spent his entire life in his father’s shadow, ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ is a sobering reminder of the price we pay for perfection. Directed by David Gelb, who also created Netflix’s hugely popular, Chef’s Table, ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ is a must-see for foodies and film-buff’s alike!

Rent it on Amazon.

The Michelle Obama Podcast (Podcast)

After the success of her book, ‘Becoming’ (which we featured in May’s SPOTLIGHT), former First Lady Michelle Obama has just released her first podcast, ‘The Michelle Obama Podcast’. In each episode, Michelle Obama and a guest deep dive into a conversation, reflecting on the gift of hindsight. In the first episode, ‘President Barack Obama’, Michelle and Barack Obama rehash some of the conversations they’ve had together in isolation recently, discussing family, responsibilities, and the current state of the world.
